Nutrisystem Review - New Program, New Foods On The Way! An
interview about the new NutriSystem Glycemic Index Program with Dr. Jay Satz
In the last issue of this NutriSystem Weight Loss newsletter, we told you that
there's a new, revolutionary program coming to NutriSystem members this December (click here to read more about that). For months, we've been
evaluating our program, listening to members, and reformulating our foods to provide you with the best NutriSystem program ever!
This week, we'd like to explain to you a little bit of the science behind the new program that led us to create the healthiest NutriSystem foods
ever. The new meals and desserts are part of our new plan that provides you more complete nutrition, and helps your body to burn more fat so you get
the most effective weight loss program possible.
In-house nutrition expert (and the man who named and developed the NutriSystem
Food program way back in the beginning) Dr. Jay Satz headed up the charge of creating a new program with new foods, and we thought we'd ask him
a few questions about the strategy and science behind it all.
NutriSystem Advanced - Why Good Carbs Are Better Than No Carbs
Many weight loss plans these days encourage abandoning carbs altogether (and going ultra high-protein). However, your body needs carbs for a variety
of reasons, including:
• Carbohydrates are a direct source of energy and your body needs them to fuel its metabolism.
• A very low carb diet is difficult to stay on for any length of time because you like carbs, and your body craves them.
• The high fat content in most low carb diets can cause yo-yo dieting and the long-term effects of that can seriously affect your health.
• Low carb diets don't provide enough direct energy so your body is instead forced to burn protein (muscle mass) for fuel, which hampers weight loss
and actually slows down your metabolism.
The new NutriSystem Glycemic Index Program, coming this December, centers around "good" carbs that provide your body with energy, keep your
metabolism burning fat, and control your hunger.
Why has NutriSystem created a new program with new foods?
In the last few years, the weight loss industry has been bombarded with major controversies surrounding issues like whether carbohydrates are good
or bad for you, whether the high-protein diets work or not, and how "low fat" can be too low fat. At NutriSystem, we looked into all of these
issues, and based on the most recent scientific research available in weight loss and nutrition, we created a new, revolutionary weight loss
program. It centers around the proven solution to all of these nutritional dilemmas, and that is, a program that includes good carbohydrates and
optimum amounts of proteins and fats. Our new program does this, and the new foods are based on something called the Glycemic Index.
What is the Glycemic Index?
The Glycemic Index, which is recognized internationally and by the World Health Organization, measures the quality of carbohydrates and their impact
on your blood sugar levels. Some carbs are broken down in your body too quickly and this spikes your blood sugar levels. This spike causes your
insulin to also spike, which in turn, causes your body to store fat (something you do not want to happen if you're trying to lose weight!). These
easily digested carbs are given a "high" glycemic value, and are referred to as "bad" carbs.
Other carbs are metabolized more efficiently by your body and break down slowly which stabilizes your blood sugar levels so your insulin levels
don't spike, and you don't store fat (a good thing if you're dieting). These slowly digested carbs are listed as "low" on the glycemic index, and
are referred to as "good" carbs.
In other words, the "good" carb equation looks like this:
GOOD CARBS = NORMAL BLOOD SUGAR & INSULIN LEVELS = LESS FAT STORED
(and LESS HUNGER, too!)
Knowing this, when we created our new program and its foods, we focused on formulating our foods with those "good" carbs that rate well on the
glycemic index. Because they stabilize your blood sugar levels, you're less hungry and your cravings are kept to a minimum. It's really the science
of weight loss.
How will eating foods with low glycemic index values improve my ability to lose weight?
Again, low glycemic foods are healthier for you because they don't spike your blood sugar levels, so your insulin doesn't spike (which is the thing
that causes you to store fat). But also, when your blood sugar levels are stable, that reduces the feeling of hunger. Low glycemic carbohydrate
foods stay in your system longer, and you feel full for a longer period of time.
In a nutshell, following the new NutriSystem Weight Loss Plan that includes
low-calorie, portion-controlled, good carb foods, you will decrease the storage of fat in your body so you lose weight without being hungry.
Do the new, low glycemic foods taste good?
Yes, they do! In fact, when we went into the kitchens to make sure our foods were healthy with optimum levels of good carbs, proteins, fats and
fiber, we focused on taste, too. No doubt, we know how important that is! I believe our members will be thrilled with some of the new offerings and
their great flavor. Soon, we'll be releasing the complete list of new foods, but for now, I can tell you that it includes many new-and-improved
NutriSystem favorites, plus some newcomers like Lemon Poppy Seed Muffins, Cheeseburgers, Cheese Omelets, Thin Crust Pizzas, Peppercorn Beef, Chicken
with Lemon Ginger Sauce, and even chocolates!
